Event Details:

Please mark your calendars for the first talk of our Winter 2024 Feminist Lunch Series to be given on Friday, Mar. 15 at noon in Harriet Irving Library's Innovation Hub, Room #316 (third floor), on UNB Campus in Fredericton by Dr. Sarah-jane NUSSBAUM (UNB Law).

The talk is titled: “"The Politics of Listening: Prisoners’ Voices in a Criminal Law Class"”.

Teaching criminal law involves teaching students to listen to authoritative voices—primarily the voices of appellate judges. This presentation will explore the possibility of expanding listening practices in a first-year criminal law course by bringing the voices of prisoners into class through the medium of prison writing. I draw on feminist scholarship on the politics of listening. This body of work encourages critical reflection on when and how we listen, bringing attention to power relations and contexts of difference and inequality.

Dr. Sarah-jane Nussbaum is an Assistant Professor at UNB Law, where she teaches Criminal Law, the Advanced Criminal Law Seminar, and Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility. Her scholarship critically examines the criminal law system’s roles in furthering systemic oppression, with a particular focus on sentencing and legal education. She holds a PhD from Osgoode Hall Law School, an LLM from the University of Cambridge, and JD and BA degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. She previously served as a Law Clerk at the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan.

All are welcome!

The next event will be held on Mar. 22 with a talk by Julia Torrie from STU History. Mark your calendar!

The Feminist Lunch Series is organized by the UNB Gender & Women’s Studies Program, the UNB/STU University Women’s Centre, UNB Libraries and UNB Alumnae association. For more information on the series, contact Sophie Lavoie (lavoie@unb.ca).
