Event Details:

Please mark your calendars for the last talk of our Fall 2023 Feminist Lunch Series to be given on Friday, Nov.17 at noon in Harriet Irving Library's Innovation Hub, Room #316 (third floor), on UNB Campus in Fredericton by Dr. Tracy Glynn, (STU Environment & Society).

The talk is titled: “Seeing empathy as resistance: a conjunctural photovoice study of women and mining in Indonesia”.

Mining is increasingly under the scholarly microscope for its social and environmental impacts, including its uneven gender impacts. My research team in Sorowako, Indonesia paired photovoice with a discussion on conjunctures in the photo-stories to study the everyday resistance of women across two communities affected by a long-established nickel mining and smelting operation. We noted the combined methods facilitated empathetic responses and cross-community solidarity, a powerful antidote to the hyper-individualism and social discord fostered by mining interests in the neoliberal capitalist period. As Indonesia plans to open dozens more nickel mines and smelters, in the rush to supply nickel for electric vehicle batteries, our study asks scholars to consider participatory action research methods to look for empathy and solidarity.

Dr. Glynn is the National Director of Operations and Projects for the Canadian Health Coalition. She also holds a regular teaching appointment in the Environment & Society program and School of Social Work at St. Thomas University, and teaches sociology courses at St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick. She is involved in many social justice organizations in Fredericton and was coauthor of the book The Great Trees of New Brunswick.

All are welcome! Cookies and warm beverages available.
