Title: Flow Measurement Using Low-Field Magnetic Resonance
Presented by: Sebastian Richard
Abstract: Magnetic resonance (MR) has a long track record of accurately measuring a wide range of flows non-invasively. Most existing MR based methods employ large and costly high-field superconducting magnets and time varying magnetic field gradient systems to spatially resolve across the sample volume. This greatly limits the practicality of measurements outside of a research lab setting. Here at UNB, the MRI group has recently introduced a methodology to determine the average velocity and flow behaviour index of laminar pipe flow using simple magnetic resonance techniques suitable for use with portable and cost-effective low-field hardware. Knowledge of the average velocity and flow behaviour index allows for reconstruction of the flow velocity profile. In addition, this approach can be effectively used to detect changes to the velocity profile shape at turbulent flow rates for comparison with empirical models. Initial testing and validation of the methodology was carried out on an idealized high-field magnet system. In this talk, current progress in developing a low-field hardware design, specifically optimized for a practical implementation of this methodology, will be presented and discussed.
