The Monday Night Film Series presents PRISONER’S DAUGHTER on Monday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Tilley Hall, room 102.

A terminally ill prisoner Max (Brian Cox) gets to spend his final few weeks under house arrest with his estranged daughter Maxine (Kate Beckinsale) and her 12-year-old son. Maxine grudgingly accepts the arrangement — under the condition that Max pays rent — given her dire financial situation.

Catherine Hardwicke’s sharply drawn, slow-simmer domestic drama has the cool vibe of an indie film from a generation ago, from the lived-in look of the Vegas sets to the authentic performances of the terrific cast. The beauty of Beckinsale’s performance is that she never stands outside Maxine. She plays all her rage, confusion, shame, sadness, love and fear from within the limitations of Maxine’s experience. Cox’s turn on Succession has secured his reputation as an actor at the top of his craft. His performance here is full of gravitas, regret and history, plus something else — the unshakable dignity of the tough guy.

Max calls in a favor with his shady former associates and gets free restoration work done on the house, and he enlists the help of his best friend, boxing trainer Hank (the great Ernie Hudson), to teach self-defense to Ezra, who is regularly bullied at school.

Catherine Hardwicke... navigates the father-daughter drama with restraint, ferreting out warmth alongside resentment. Cox’s stripped-down performance is affecting as he unpeels the humanity in a man who’s relied on his fists for way too long. Thelma Adams, AARP Movies for Grownups.

This year, 30 limited release, independent foreign & Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $10/film, but a yearly film society membership reduces admission cost to $7/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night.
