Bev Bramble will present and discuss with attendees some of the principles of course design that seem to be commonly misunderstood and/or elusively difficult to implement, based on his 14 years of study, practice and reflection as an instructional designer at UNB. Things such as:
- If the research says one of the most impactful teaching practices is frequent student application of concepts and individualized feedback, why do we have classes of hundreds? What can we do?
- What is the "active" ingredient in "active and collaborative learning?"
- Why do all course designers seem to think that lecturing is bad? Is it really?
- Who needs to memorize anything when they can just "google it?"
- Is it ironic to lecture about active and collaborative learning?
- Are students just paying customers whose every whim we must indulge?
