UNB Art Centre Virtual Exhibition Opening of Attending The Apocalypse-FR
Event Details:
The UNB Art Centre presents its newest exhibition on-line. Attending The Apocalypse by Jennifer Lee Wiebe and Janice Wright Cheney is eerily prophetic as we face-down the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibition will open Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. by launching the catalogue in a virtual space rather than an actual space.
In Attending The Apocalypse, Jennifer Lee Wiebe and Janice Wright Cheney provide a commentary on contemporary society by exploring the idea of networks— both digital and biological. Social media, like mycelia, has a broad network and an organic reach.
In Scratchcards for the Apocalypse, Jennifer Lee Wiebe explores language and our understanding of content in a series of canvasses painted with tweets made by Donald Trump since 2015. In Elysium, Janice Wright Cheney explores the symbolic power of mushrooms and the potential for mycelia to reshape our society.
Both artists have been active members of Fredericton’s art community for several decades. Teaching Foundation Visual Arts at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, they inspire students to discover their own artistic potential and as members of ConneXion ARC, they participate in creating a vibrant art scene in the city of Fredericton. Having exhibited widely in both group and solo exhibits, Attending The Apocalypse is the first time these two artists have presented their work together.
Stay tuned throughout the month as we post links, pictures and videos to engage our gallery going audience. As well, in conjunction with the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design’s Guest Lecture Series, Jennifer Lee Wiebe and Janice Wright Cheney will give a virtual walking tour of the exhibit and a Q & A in April. The link will be provided at a later date.
The UNB Art Centre galleries at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus are closed until further notice as a result of the COVID-19 emergency. Please follow our exhibits and programs on-line.
