Ariela Freedman will present the lecture, 'A Strange Work: Literary Testimony in Holocaust Narrative.'

As James E. Young writes, though violent events seem to stimulate – indeed, demand – “factually insistent’ documentation, being attentive to the poetics of literary testimony allows “a deeper understanding of the interpenetration between events, narrative and historic interpretation.”  

In this lecture, Ariela Freedman looks at the poetics of literary testimony in three examples:  Charlotte Salomon’s artwork a clef Leben? Oder Theatre? Anna Molnar Hegedus’ memoir, As the Lilacs Bloomed, and the doubled testimonial of Molly Applebaum’s wartime diary and her retrospective memoir, Buried Words.  In each of these, the work implicates both the testimonial and the unrecoverable, and illuminates the different ways experience is mediated in time, through form, and through memory.
