Public lecture: Claudia Mosquera-SJ

The department of history and politics and the faculty of arts at the University of New Brunswick, Saint John invite you to a public lecture by Dr. Claudia Mosquera Rosero-Labbé on "CITIZENSHIP AND MESTIZAJE: RIGHTS IN THE BLACK COMMUNITIES OF THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN.” The talk is co-sponsored by the Black History Society of New Brunswick and PRUDE, Inc. 

The public lecture will be about Dr. Mosquera's work with Afro-Colombian Black communities in the Colombian Caribbean region of La Guajira, and the ways that ideas of race and citizenship and mestizaje intersect in the region, today and historically. 

Dr. Mosquera is a Harrison McCain Visiting Professor in the department of anthropology at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton from January to July 2019. She is one of Colombia's preeminent established Black scholars, and an expert on the African Diaspora in the Black Americas. She is a Professor of Social Work and a Researcher of the Center for Social Studies at the National University of Colombia in Bogotá, Colombia. She obtained her PhD from the University of Laval in Quebec and her MA from the University of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle). Dr. Mosquera is part of the Research Group on Racial Equality, Cultural Difference, Environmental Conflicts, and Racisms in the Black Americas (IDCARAN). 

It will take place on Wednesday, June 19, at the Mary Oland Theatre at the NB Museum in Saint John at 6 p.m., with a reception to follow at 7 p.m.
