The MF Report Presentation of Xu Ma -FR
Event Details:
The MF Report Presentation of Xu Ma will be held. Report Title: Early Growth and Survival of Planted Hardwoods in the Acadian Forest.
Supervisor: Dr. J. Kershaw, FOREM
Supervisory Committee: Mr. Jasen Golding, FOREM
Dr. Anthony Taylor, NRCan/Adjunct FOREM
Abstract: Establishing advanced hardwoods regeneration in the Acadian forest is playing a more and more important role because of climate change and potential value. Due to the lack of similar practices in Acadian forest, hardwood seedlings including red oak (Quercus rubra L.), sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) were planted in the Noonan Research Forest (NRF) beginning in 2015. Cage, plant fraction, and leaf production combined with partial harvest, relating to the early growth and survival were tested using nlme model and Loglikelihood ratios. Caged seedlings had an overall better performance. Cage had a positive impact on survival. Plant fraction had a negative impact on diameter growth. Leaf production had negative impact on diameter growth, but it had a positive impact on height growth. Caging or fencing is recommended to reduce the browsing pressure and improve early growth and survival for planted hardwood seedlings.
