CETL Hosts Effective Teaching Institute Teaching Cases - What's the Story There-FR
Event Details:
The guest facilitator is Annie Prud’homme-Généreux.
Case studies are stories with a pedagogical objective. Business schools have been using them since the 1970s, but it is only recently that instructors in other disciplines have incorporated them in their classrooms. Cases provide the scaffold for structuring learning, and allow students to practice the skills needed to be practitioners of their discipline, including predicting results, problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication.
In this workshop, you will experience a case study and classroom management tools from the student's point of view, and then you will engage in discussions about best practices and how to get the most out of this technique. Come prepared to do the heavy lifting, and I'll tell you a story!
Biography
Annie loves sharing her enthusiasm for the topics she teaches, but she doesn't like to talk in front of a room. In her 15 years of teaching at three universities, she's managed to never lecture. She's trained in PBL, TBL, the CREATE method, and the case discussion method; the last is her favourite way of engaging students. She's one of the five founding faculty at Quest University Canada, was the recipient of the 2012 National Association of Biology Teachers' Award for innovative teaching, and was recently appointed to the Campus Alberta Quality Council that reviews and recommends Alberta degree programs to the Minister of Advanced Education. Annie is currently the VP of Science at TELUS World of Science - Edmonton, where she oversees the development of programs, exhibits, and shows to wow kids of all ages and influence the science discourse of the City. Annie has an honours degree in biology from McGill University, a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia, and she is currently completing a Masters of Arts in Science Writing at Johns Hopkins University. She has a Provincial Instructor Diploma, a Certificate in Museum Studies, and a Diploma in Non-Profit Management.
