The next talk of the Winter 2018 Feminist Lunch Series in the Faculty of Arts at UNBF will be given by Dr. Chantal Richard (Etudes françaises).

Dr. Richard’s paper is titled: "Acadian Mothers & Loyalist Ladies: Women & Nation-building in late 19th Century NB.”

Coauthored with Margaret Conrad (History) and Nicole Boudreau (University of Maine, Fort Kent), this talk examines their ongoing project called Vocabularies of Identity/Vocabulaires identitaires which explores a bilingual database of newspaper articles, published 1880 to 1900, to describe the emergence and evolution of collective identities among Acadians and descendants of Loyalists in NB. They examine how women shaped nation-building despite lacking obvious visibility in the press and compare how gender roles were defined in each society. Along with the role of women as attested in the press at the time, they also assess the gendered language of nationalism.

All are welcome...please bring your lunch!

The Feminist Lunch Series is organized by the UNB Gender & Women’s Studies Program, the UNB/STU University Women’s Centre and the Office of the UNB Dean of Arts. For more information on the series, contact Sasha Mullally (sasham@unb.ca).
