Get hooked on crocheting! Join artist Kim Bent in this introductory workshop into the world of this unique fibre art. While more experienced learners are welcome, the focus will be on basics activities and skills. Learn how to make a “granny square” (or is it a diamond?). These are the basic building blocks for larger projects. To get there, you’ll learn and practice two universal crochet stitches: the chain stitch and the double crochet stitch. If you're more ambitious and get “hooked”, you’ll learn the single crochet stitch, and possibly even the triple crochet stitch! Bring some yarn if you like (although all necessary supplies, and tools will be provided) . Also, feel free to bring along a pattern that you’d like to try and your own hook if you have one. You’ll also learn how to sit comfortably and breathe for relaxation while concentrating on acquiring a new skill. Making something with your hands can be a great way to relieve stress!

There is a $5 materials fee (cash payable to the instructor in the workshop). Plus, crochet hooks may be available for purchase for those who get hooked (prices will vary).
Kim Bent studied Sociology at UNB. After a short stint conducting social research, she spent most of her working career in museums and art galleries in Saint John and Fredericton. While at UNB, Kim enrolled in a studio course in weaving at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design as an antidote to writing a Master’s thesis. Her interest in textiles and yarn, in particular, goes back to early childhood when she learned from various family members and other mentors how to make things with yarn and thread, including crochet, knitting, needlework and string art. Since then, she has explored other techniques such as rug hooking, felting, and spinning. Weaving has remained a mainstay and her first love, though spinning is quickly gaining ground! Kim has taught beginning weaving through the UNB Art Centre and the City of Fredericton’s edVentures program and is an active member of FAN (Fibre Arts Network) in Fredericton. Her work can be seen in the UNB Art Centre 2017 fibre arts exhibition.
