This course introduces some fundamental principles of finance to personal financial decision making and highlights behavioural science (economics) ideas pertaining to personal financial decision making.
Topics include financial goal setting, budgeting, tax planning, cash management, personal credit – getting out of debt quickly; how to invest successfully in various financial markets – stocks, bonds, mutual funds; risk management and retirement planning.

What you will learn
This course is designed to help you:
- Learn how to set meaningful personal financial goals and prepare corresponding financial plans to achieve those goals.
- Identify and understand the resources available from financial markets and institutions for savings, investments, and as sources of credit as well as how to use credit responsibly and how to manage personal credit.
- Discuss how to avoid credit traps and how to pay off your debts the fastest way possible.
- Plan for home purchase (if so desired) and other major expenditures.
- Understand your insurance needs and manage your personal risks with the appropriate choice of insurance and other mechanisms.
- Understand the financial markets, institutions, and financial securities available as vehicles for saving, investment and financial risk management.
- Gain knowledge on how financial markets and financial securities work and be able to make the right selection of stocks, bonds, or mutual funds to invest for yourself
- Design proper retirement and estate plans for the post-retirement lifestyle.
- Understand why people make bad financial decisions and how to avoid that from happening to your personal financial decisions.
Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

- Final exam (invigilated, 20%)
The exam(s) for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser and Monitor). This is a free tool provided with this course, a webcam is required. More information will be given once you have been registered.
