Open entry online courses are open year round to UNB/STU undergraduate and graduate students, adult learners, students studying at other post-secondary institutions, and prospective students.
These courses provide the same university credit as our in-person courses but are 100% online and self-paced (once registered, you have 6 months to complete your course).
There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. Learn more about open entry course tuition and fees and methods of payment.
Courses do not begin until your application is processed, payment is received and your registration is completed.
Fall term starts Sept. 1
Winter term starts Jan. 1
Summer term starts May 1
Note: You cannot self-register for open entry online courses through UNB’s internal Student Planning & Registration system.
Government student loan programs (Canadian and US) require courses be completed within a traditional term timeframe.
This means, if you are a government student loan recipient, you must complete any open entry courses within the term in which you register.
Therefore, you will not have the standard six months to complete open entry online courses. Instead, your fall term completion date is Dec. 31, your winter term completion date is April 30 and your summer term completion date is August 31.
A student carrying the equivalent of three or more courses in a term is a full-time student.
A student carrying less than the equivalent of three courses in a term is a part-time student.
If you wish to add another online course, this would change your status to full-time. You will be required to pay full-time tuition and fees and you must follow the application deadlines for full-time students.
Yes. You will need to provide a "Letter of Permission" (LOP) from your home institution.
Yes. You must submit the online application, obtain a "Letter of Permission" and submit payment requested. STU full-time students follow UNB full-time enrolment guidelines. STU letter of permision for off-campus study will follow the enrolment deadlines based on the number of courses you are taking with UNB. It is your responsibility to meet STU Registrar's Office deadlines.
You will have six months to complete the course; however, you can certainly complete it sooner - you set the pace (student loan recipients, see the following question).

Courses taken during the summer term are charged per course (using the part-time rates), regardless of the number of courses you are registered for. Exceptions would apply for programs designed to be full-time for all three terms of study.
No. The courses are open year-round and are offered every academic term. There is no enrollment cap and they will be available for you to incorporate into your schedule.
You have not missed anything and do not need to catch-up on any course work. Open entry online courses are self-paced; therefore, there are no "log-in" or class meeting times like in-person courses. Once registered, you will start the course and proceed through the material at your own pace, completing on or before your official course end date.
After you submit your online course application, you will be sent an "application received" email. Once your application has been reviewed, which can take up to seven days, you will receive another email providing the next step to complete your application to be registered for the course(s). Watch your junk/spam folder and mark these emails as "not junk".

While there are no requirements for you to attend a specific virtual class time, there is an instructor assigned to the course who will be available to help answer any questions you have along the way. They may also offer virtual drop-in office hours or will be available for virtual appointments. Even though there is no class time, many courses offer video recorded lectures which will guide you through the material.
Review the individual course information for the course(s) you are interested in applying for. It will indicate if the course has an exam(s) and if it requires invigilation.
Review the CEL Refund and Withdrawal Policies. Refer to the charts for refund amounts and notations that may appear on your academic record based on when you email records@unb.ca that you wish to withdraw. Include your name, UNB ID#, course and term.
