Faculty: Faculty of Science, Applied Science, and Engineering
Degree(s): A Minor in Geology is available within the Bachelor of Science in Saint John. Full degrees in Geology (Earth Science) need to be completed in Fredericton.
Campus: Saint John
Geology is the study of the Earth, its origin, structure and composition. Although many of us don’t take the time to stop to think about just how much geology affects our surroundings, to a geologist, our modern-day landscape speaks volumes.
The rocks of which it is composed give us clues as to how and when it formed. Their structures help unravel the secrets of what the Earth was like in the past, and their current shapes show us what forces have acted on them since they formed.
The goal of geology as a science is to better understand the processes that acted upon the Earth’s system in the past to help us foresee how geologic events and processes will affect us in the future.
Geology encompasses many parts of the Earth system. In studying the Earth’s origins and evolution, you will learn about the formation of the planet, how the continents and oceans were formed, how they grow or are destroyed and how all of this was discovered. By studying fossils, you'll learn how our world has changed over time and what that means for our environment.
You will learn about minerals, how they form and grow, and under what conditions this happens, then explore how minerals come together to form rocks, which tell you about the environment in which they formed.
We will talk about volcanoes, landslides, earthquakes, glaciers, deserts and rivers - all of which shape the surface of the planet.
We teach first-year courses in the geology and engineering programs. Some second-year and upper level courses are available, with an emphasis on the connections between Earth history, the environment, and other aspects of the world we live in. Combined, these courses allow students to earn a Minor in Geology (24 ch of Geology courses taken during the BSc degree programme).
