Concurrent Degree in Arts and Leadership Studies

The Faculty of Arts and the School of Leadership Studies (SLS) at UNB in Fredericton are collaborating to make it possible for a student to graduate with both a BA and a BPhil in four years. This concurrent program offers the benefits and core elements detailed elsewhere in this calendar for both the Bachelor of Arts (BA), including first-year distribution requirements and a single Major, and the Bachelor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Leadership (BPhil), including all core courses and summer internships.

The program is ideal for students with an interest in Leadership Studies and in one of the Arts subjects. It is a demanding program that requires serious commitment from the student from the outset and throughout the degree.

Students complete the full program of Leadership Studies (LEAD) courses required for the BPhil over four years instead of the traditional three. This timeline allows them to progress through the Arts and Leadership Studies programs simultaneously, while integrating both sets of courses in each year of their degree. At SLS, students will complete the two required internships during the summer terms – one in Canada between their first and second year, and one internationally between their third and fourth year. They will benefit from the cohort learning model at SLS throughout their studies, and can participate fully in community life, peer mentorship, and all student leadership experiences offered.

Within Arts, students can major or honour in one of the following areas: Ancient World Studies, Anthropology, Comparative Cultural Studies, Creative Writing, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Economics, Economics Studies, English, Film Production, French, History, Media Arts and Cultures, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Socio-Cultural Studies in Health, or Sociology. A student may apply to complete the Honours requirements in their chosen subject, but this will require more credit hours than a single Major, typically extending the concurrent program by one or two terms.

In addition, interdisciplinary programs in International Development Studies, Law in Society, and Gender and Women’s Studies are available as part of an Arts Double Major or Joint Honours; Drama is also available as a Double Major. However, students are advised that completing a Double Major or Joint Honours will require more credit hours than a Single Major or Honours and will extend the concurrent program by one or more additional terms.

Students in the concurrent program can count many of their courses toward the requirements for both degrees, so it is important to select courses carefully at the outset. To complete the concurrent degree, students must satisfy both the BA and BPhil degree requirements. Fulfilling these requirements will involve completing at least 153 ch. However, the concurrent program is designed such that if they wish, a student can transfer into either the BA or the BPhil partway through the concurrent degree.

Application and Admission

To be admitted to the concurrent program, students must meet the admissions requirements for both Arts and BPhil programs. Applicants will need to provide the additional supplemental items required for admission to the BPhil program, including a resume, a cover letter, and an optional portfolio or other work samples. Further information regarding the program is available through the offices of the Dean of Arts and the Dean of SLS.

Faculty Affiliation

Students in the concurrent program will be registered as BA/BPhil students. They will be assigned to academic advisors both at SLS and in the Faculty of Arts.
