Lectures examine the composition, crystallography and optical properties of minerals and rocks, the thermodynamic parameters that control the behaviour of geological systems such as pressure, temperature, activity and fugacity and the kinetic parameters that control crystallisation rates of rocks and minerals. The laboratories focus on the practical aspects of mineral and rock description and identification using orthoscopic and conoscopic polarizing microscopy techniques.
