ENGL6686Repairing the Circle: Sex and Gender in Indigenous Literature, Art, and Film3 ch

This course examines the role that colonization has had on gender and sexuality in Indigenous cultures across Turtle Island. We explore how Indigenous people viewed gender prior to European contact and how the imposition of Christianity and the Indian Act have impacted gender and sexuality in Indigenous communities. Studying a selection of novels, poems, creative nonfiction, films, and visual art, we explore the ways contemporary Indigenous authors and artists reclaim Indigenous conceptions of gender and sexuality. Topics to be discussed include queer and two-spirit literature and identity; gender in Indigenous languages; the role of the body in decolonization; missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirits; Indigenous feminism; Indigenous masculinity; and Indigenous eroticism.

Prerequisite(s): must be a graduate student in English.
