The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of High Frequency Systems Engineer with the Department of Physics. This is a term full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the APT employee group. The position is funded by external monies with a salary range of $64,156 - $89,820 per annum.
This position will be focused on Research and Development of High Frequency Radio Systems (HFRS) maintenance of Ionosondes, and develop and maintain scientific and control software, and provide a wide variety of Engineering and technical support to our research team, students, and the wider scientific community. The position will be the primary contact with our external partners in the ongoing development of HFRS.
Position summary:
- Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance of highly sensitive HFRS scientific equipment in remote Arctic locations.
- Adjust, align, replace, or repair electronic equipment, assemblies, and components following equipment manuals and schematics, using soldering tools and other hand and small power tools.
- Working knowledge of IP networking, video, and other data protocols for use in communication systems.
- Primary HFRS contact with outside agencies R&D scientists associated with program.
- Provide technical support, guidance, and supervision of graduate/undergraduate students' research activities.
- Co-supervise other project personnel ensuring contract milestone and deliver dates are met.
- Deploy equipment, which includes: direct liaising with government agencies, charter services for remote locations, travel and accommodation arrangements within treasury board budgetary constraints.
- Lead the R&D on extending the existing automated autonomous operation and analysis capabilities of digital ionosondes; ongoing analysis of the emerging related work in the field of HF transmission and communication; assessment of existing state-of-the-art techniques, design and development of new approaches for automated medium to long range signal propagation.
- Lead the R&D on advancing development of existing technologies of HF detection and signal degradation mitigation strategies through deep understanding of the existing basic HF detection and mitigation framework; on-going literature review of the latest advancements in this field; design, implement and integrate advanced capabilities of the framework in the areas of detection, analysis and signal degradation mitigation.
Requirements/Skills:
- BS/BE in Engineering or other technical field and 3+ years of experience in Radio Frequency Systems or master's degree with specialization in RF systems. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
- Must have P.Eng or be eligible to apply for P.Eng designation.
- Possess a wide knowledge of radio equipment and techniques including frequency propagation.
- Computer Proficiency specifically in MathLab/IDL, C+, Python, Excel, Word, Power Point, Visio and MS Project.
- Ability to work independently while at the same time participating as an effective member in a team.
- Excellent judgement, decision making, and organizational skills required, strong analytical, written and verbal skills, problem solving, and critical thinking is required.
- Proven track record as a people manager, managing diverse, cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of experience related to research, industrial or academic, and knowledge of commercialization.
- Flexibility with working hours including an ability and willingness to travel is required to remote field locations during potentially adverse environmental conditions in Canadian High Arctic.
