ENGL 1145 An Introduction to Prose Fiction

Credit Value:

Three (3) credit hours

Course Description:

In this course, we will study the structure and style of the short story, focusing on classic works by British, American, and Canadian writers.  We will explore the social contexts, the innovations in narrative form, and the elements of fiction, including plot, setting, characters, dialogue, and narration. This course will also provide you with an opportunity to become a more sophisticated writer.  Writing lessons and quizzes will help you to practice your skills, and three essays will allow you to provide your own insightful and articulate analyses of the stories.

*Note: Because this is an open-entry course, students have some freedom to set their own pace for the reading and the writing. However, the essays must be submitted one by one, meaning students are not permitted to submit Essay 2 until Essay 1 has been submitted, marked, and returned.  This ensure that students have time to consult the feedback and develop their writing skills as they progress through the assignments in the course. Students should allow up to two weeks of turn-around time for marking each essay. In addition, UNB Online typically requires 10 days to process a request to write the final exam. Thus, if a student is aiming to finish the course within the regular length of a term (i.e. 13 weeks), he/she should spend approximately two weeks reading each novel and a week writing each essay. The essays and the final exam are compulsory, meaning that failure to complete them will result in an automatic F in the course.
