Course Description:

This course is the online version of BIOL 1001. BIOL 1009 surveys principles of biology from the molecular level to the cell. Topics include an introduction to the structure, function and synthesis of biological molecules, major cellular structures and processes such as proliferation, energy capture and metabolism, and reproduction and heredity. Examples are presented from both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

Course materials are delivered through two platforms BrightSpace(D2L) and MasteringBiology. Resources include: lecture slides, videos, interactive tutorials, concept maps and practice quizzes

Course Format:

The course is organized into 8 modules, each comprised of assigned reading, lecture files and chapter based quizzes.

Assignments & Examinations:

All assessments are completed online

Chapter based quizzes 2.5% per module =20%
2 Midterm exams (online, invigilated) 20% each =40%
Cumulative Final exam (online, invigilated)   =40%

All mid-term exams and final exams for online courses will be invigilated at an approved time and location. Please refer to the Online Exam Request Form to book.

Time Limit:

Six months from the student registration date. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date


Online courses are subject to an additional $100 non-refundable online fee per course. Fees are subject to change by the Board of Governors.
